What You Need Before Starting
Before you create your WhatsApp username, make sure you meet these requirements:
- Latest WhatsApp version — Update to the newest version on Android or iOS
- Active account — Your phone number must be verified
- Beta access (for now) — The username feature is rolling out gradually. Check WABetaInfo for the latest availability status
If the username option doesn't appear in your settings yet, don't worry. WhatsApp is set to roll out the username feature to a very limited number of users before wider release over the coming months.
Step 1: Open WhatsApp Settings
On Android, tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of the main screen and select Settings.
On iOS, tap the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen.
This is where you access all your account controls — profile, privacy, notifications, and now usernames.
Step 2: Go to Your Profile
Tap your name or profile photo at the top of the settings screen. This opens your profile editor where you can change your name, about text, and — if the feature is available — your username.
Step 3: Select "Username"
Look for the Username option below your profile name. It may appear as a new field or under an "Edit" button depending on your app version.
Tap it to open the username editor.
Step 4: Enter Your Username and Save
Type your desired username. WhatsApp checks availability in real time as you type.
Username Rules to Follow
Your username must meet these requirements:
- 3 to 30 characters long
- Start with a letter (not a number, dot, or underscore)
- Only use letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), underscores (_), and dots (.)
- No consecutive dots (john..doe won't work)
- Don't end with a dot or underscore
If your username passes all checks and is available, tap Save. Your username goes live immediately.
What If Your Username Is Taken?
Popular usernames get claimed fast. Here's what to try:
- Add a dot —
@sarah.designsinstead of@sarahdesigns - Add numbers —
@sarah2025or@sarah.99 - Add a descriptive word —
@sarahcreatesor@sarahbakes - Check Accounts Center — If you already have the username on Instagram or Facebook, you may be able to reserve it for WhatsApp through Meta's Accounts Center
Using Accounts Center for Username Reservation
Meta's Accounts Center lets you link your WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook accounts. If you've already claimed a username on Instagram or Facebook, you may be able to reserve the same one on WhatsApp.
To access Accounts Center:
- Open WhatsApp Settings
- Look for Accounts Center or Meta accounts
- Link your Instagram or Facebook account
- Check if your existing username is available for WhatsApp
This cross-platform consistency is one of the biggest advantages of the username feature.
What Happens After You Set Your Username
Once your username is active:
- People can search for you by your username in WhatsApp
- Your wa.me/username link becomes active — share it anywhere
- Your phone number stays hidden from people who find you through your username
- The username key verifies your identity cryptographically
You can change your username at any time, but remember — once you release a username, someone else can claim it.
Summary
Setting up a WhatsApp username takes less than a minute. The hardest part is choosing one that's available. Start with your real name, keep it simple, and use dots for readability. If your first choice is taken, get creative with variations.
The username feature is Meta's biggest privacy upgrade for WhatsApp. Take advantage of it early while good usernames are still available.
